Vatican - Basilica di San Pietro

This is my last post for now on Italy ..The Vatican was our last stop. Ideally it should have been the first as we were staying very close to it near Lepanto, the metro stop if you are coming from Termini . Ironically there were no buses that would take us directly from our hotel to the Vatican, so we decided to make it our last stop so that we can pick our luggage enroute to the station ...

Vatican, the sovereign city state , landlocked in Rome is governed by the Pope . .The route from Rome takes you across the Tiber to St Peter's Square into St Peter's Basilca . The Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope, the Sistine Chapel and the museums are the other must visits here. We were told that the Pope was away in Austria ... There were strict dress codes..shorts, short skirts and even sleveless T shirts and tees wre not allowed..

We spent a lot of time marvelling at the Basilca, especially at the Dome, which is believed to be designed by Michaelangelo and then redesigned by architect Giacomo della Porta and then quickly made a dash to the Sistene Chapel to look at the frescos before leaving ..we lost our way again and had a train to catch in an hour...luckily we found a taxi that took us to the station in just half hour before doing a quick drive around the city again

My visit to Rome was very short and as I passed the Trevi Fountain I promised myself that I wll visit again

Wow... and to think the Catholic Church always seems to be making out they're short on cash! They've spent it all on such sumptuous buildings...

I'd love to see that stuff in real life...

Wonderful pictures... I'll give your blog a shout on mine tonight:

Pictures of the road leading to the Vatican, the St. Peter's Square, the Basilica, you against the obelisk, glimpses of the Sistine Chapel - all beautiful.

The Sistine Chapel is awesome and I still recall admiring the awesome fresco of St. Peter being handed over the key by Christ. Michelangelo, who painted the ceiling there, deserves all the admiration he gets till today.

Thank you for sharing your experiences in this lovely series of posts.

Truly mesmerizing shots. I liked the divine light inside the church, the perspective of the dome and the place associated. Wonderfully captured and this place is really worth visiting.

Sorry to have been a bit absent lately, but this week was terrible... too much to do!
Loved to see your Vatican pictures starting at Via della Conciliazione and ending at the Baldacchino, not forgetting the Swiss Guard... About the Guard, do you want to see an amazing picture? ;)) Look at: http://blogtrotta.blogspot.com/2005/11/april-in-rome-2001.html (it's the last one), and have a great weekend!
